Fortifikaation, often spelled fortification, is the process of strengthening a place to resist attack or siege, and the resulting defensive works. It encompasses military defenses as well as structures built for civil resilience. Fortifikaation aims to protect people, assets, and routes while hindering enemy movement and access.

Historically, fortifications began as simple earthworks and walls around settlements. In antiquity, fortified cities relied on ramparts, gates, and watch towers. In the Middle Ages, stone walls, keeps, moats, and battlements reflected evolving siege technologies. The early modern period introduced the star fort or trace italienne, with angled bastions designed to counter artillery and maximize fields of fire.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, fortifications included concrete bunkers, fortified ouvrages, coastal batteries, and border lines. Civil fortifications expanded to air-raid shelters, flood barriers, and seismic retrofitting to protect civilians and critical infrastructure. Design considerations include terrain, materials, labor, climate, and the expected level of threat, as well as maintenance and integration with the surrounding landscape.

Today, large permanent fortifications are less central to conventional warfare, but fortifikaation concepts persist in security planning, border controls, disaster resilience, and heritage preservation. Notable examples range from ancient city walls to 20th‑century defensive lines such as the Maginot Line and the Siegfried Line.
