Form typography is the typographic discipline applied to the design of user interface forms. It encompasses the typography used for form labels, input text, placeholders, help text, error messages, validation feedback, and call-to-action buttons. The goal is to maximize legibility, scannability, and a clear visual hierarchy to reduce user effort during data entry.

Key components include typefaces, sizes, and spacing. UI forms typically favor sans-serif typefaces for clarity at small sizes. A common hierarchy places labels at smaller sizes than input text, with sufficient line height and generous vertical spacing to separate fields. Placeholders are often lighter gray and non-distracting, while labels remain visible when fields are focused or filled. Consistent alignment, grid-based layouts, and uniform margins help users scan forms quickly. Color and contrast are used to distinguish labels, inputs, and validation messages, with attention to accessibility guidelines.

Layout decisions, such as whether to use top-aligned labels, inline labels, or floating labels, influence readability and touch targets. Error and help text should appear near the relevant field, with clear typography and visual cues to indicate status. Disabled or success states are typically conveyed through subdued or contrasting typography and color.

Accessibility considerations are central. Forms should use semantic markup (labels associated with inputs), ARIA attributes when needed, and sufficient contrast. Text sizing and responsive behavior should adapt to different devices, orientations, and localization requirements, ensuring readability across contexts. In design systems, form typography is standardized to maintain consistency and predictability in user experience.
