Fogképződés refers to the biological process by which teeth develop and form within the jawbone. This complex phenomenon begins early in embryonic development and continues throughout childhood and adolescence. The process involves the interaction of various tissues, primarily the ectoderm and mesenchyme, which give rise to the enamel, dentin, pulp, and cementum of the tooth.

The initial stage involves the formation of the dental lamina, a thickening of the oral epithelium that buds into the underlying mesenchyme. These buds then differentiate into enamel organs, responsible for producing enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. Simultaneously, mesenchymal cells aggregate and differentiate into odontoblasts, which form dentin, the layer beneath the enamel. The dental papilla develops into the tooth's pulp, containing nerves and blood vessels, while the dental sac gives rise to the cementum, which covers the root.

Tooth development follows a predictable sequence, with primary (baby) teeth initiating formation before birth and erupting in infancy. Permanent (adult) teeth begin developing concurrently with primary teeth but erupt later, replacing the deciduous teeth or emerging in empty spaces. The precise timing and sequence of tooth formation are influenced by genetic factors and hormonal signals. Disruptions in this intricate process can lead to various dental anomalies, such as missing teeth, extra teeth, or malformed teeth.
