A flysheet is an outer weatherproof sheet used to cover a tent or shelter. In camping and outdoor gear contexts, it functions as the outer waterproof layer that shields the interior from rain, wind, and sun. The term is often used interchangeably with rainfly, though in some regions “flysheet” may refer specifically to the protective outer layer rather than the inner tent.

Construction and materials: Flysheets are typically made of lightweight nylon or polyester fabrics with a waterproof coating such as polyurethane or silicone. They may be fabric-bound or coated, with taped seams to improve waterproofing. Many flysheets are designed as two-layer systems that pair with an inner tent to provide ventilation, while others are a single-piece outer shelter.

Design and setup: The flysheet is usually pitched over the inner tent and secured with pegs and guylines. It creates a vestibule or covered area for gear and shelter, and it helps reduce condensation by promoting airflow between layers. Some designs feature extra vents, mesh panels, and looped attachments to streamline setup and stability in windy conditions.

Maintenance and care: To preserve waterproofness, flysheets may require periodic reproofing with fabric care products recommended by the manufacturer. After use, they should be dried thoroughly before packing to prevent mold and odor. Proper storage away from sunlight and heat helps extend fabric life.
