fluorálás

Fluorálás is a Hungarian folk art form that emerged in the late 19th century. The term is a combination of "fluorál" meaning to fret or to decorate with intricate details, and "ás", which means act or something done. Essentially, fluorálás refers to the decorative arts, particularly in the field of embroidery, lace-making and other textiles.

In the past, women in Hungarian villages would spend their free time designing and creating unique elements such as embroidery threads, lace, etc., using various techniques like cross-stitching, needlepoint, etc. These intricate pieces were often made into adornments for traditional Hungarian clothing or household items.

This form of art enjoyed a renaissance during the early 20th century but had already experienced a decline by the 1940s due to modernization and the changes brought about by World War II. Following the war, however, fluorálás formations resurfaced and have since experienced a renaissance, assuming the form of collectives of women working together to preserve the skills required.

These members of collectives then learn the techniques and share them with younger generations. As a result, the origins and historical roots can be observed and reunited. Following this discovery, art forms not well known previously acquired renewed relevance.

Fluorálás features floral and geometric patterns that can be found in doors, windows, chairs and frames with delicate details. In addition, variant presentation often featured symbolic plant-motif that in quickly comprehensible manner indicate folklore association.
