Fluoresenssiväriangiografia (FVA), also known as fluorescein angiography, is a diagnostic medical imaging technique used to visualize the blood vessels in the retina and choroid of the eye. The procedure involves injecting a fluorescent dye, typically sodium fluorescein, into a vein in the arm. As the dye circulates through the bloodstream, it reaches the blood vessels of the eye. A special camera equipped with filters then captures a series of photographs or video images as the dye passes through the retinal and choroidal vasculature. The fluorescence emitted by the dye under specific light wavelengths allows for detailed observation of blood flow, the integrity of the blood vessel walls, and the presence of any abnormalities.

FVA is a valuable tool for diagnosing and monitoring a variety of retinal diseases. It is commonly used to detect and assess conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal vein or artery occlusions, and inflammatory conditions of the eye. The images obtained can reveal leakage from abnormal blood vessels, blockages, or areas of poor blood supply, which are crucial for determining the appropriate treatment plan. While generally safe, potential side effects can include temporary skin and urine discoloration, nausea, and rarely, allergic reactions to the dye. The interpretation of fluorescein angiograms requires specialized training and expertise.
