An angiogram is a medical imaging technique used to visualize the inside of blood vessels. Angiograms are commonly performed to diagnose conditions such as coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, aneurysms, and vascular malformations. They are also used to guide minimally invasive procedures, like angioplasty and stenting, which can open up narrowed or blocked blood vessels. The procedure is typically performed in a hospital setting by a radiologist or cardiologist. Before the angiogram, patients may need to fast and undergo blood tests. During the procedure, a small incision is made, usually in the groin or arm, to insert a catheter. This catheter is then guided to the area of interest. While generally safe, angiograms carry some risks, including bleeding, allergic reaction to the contrast dye, and damage to the blood vessel.
