Flowrestricting refers to the property or practice of limiting the rate at which a fluid or gas passes through a conduit, component, or system. It is achieved by introducing impedance—such as a narrowed channel, restrictive fitting, or throttling element—and can be intentional for control or safety, or incidental due to wear, blockage, or poor design. The term covers both fixed, passive restrictions and adjustable mechanisms.

Common flowrestricting methods include fixed orifices, capillary tubes, porous media, and throttling valves. The resulting pressure drop and flow rate depend on the opening size, fluid properties, and flow regime. Designers often use flow coefficients or calibration curves to predict performance and ensure repeatability.

Flowrestricting elements are used in metering and safety applications, beverage and chemical processing, medical infusion sets, and automotive or industrial systems to regulate flow, limit backpressure, or prevent overpressurization. They can provide simple, passive control or be part of an active feedback system.

Key considerations include the balance between sufficient flow and adequate restriction, potential for clogging or wear, temperature and viscosity effects, and maintenance needs.
