Most floaties are made from PVC or vinyl and are inflated through a one-way valve; many have a single air chamber, while higher-quality items feature multiple chambers for redundancy. Some newer products use fabric shells or include decorative figures. Size and buoyancy vary by product and intended user.

Safety considerations are important. Floaties are not life jackets or certified personal flotation devices and should not be relied upon for drowning prevention. Children should be supervised at all times when wearing floaties, and devices should be checked for leaks, defects, proper sizing, and correct inflation. Users should avoid using floaties in open water, near rough conditions, or without adequate supervision. They are best seen as recreational aids rather than safety devices.

Regulatory and regional notes vary. In many countries, consumer product safety standards apply to flotation aids. In the United States, the CPSC cautions that inflatable devices are not substitutes for life jackets. In some regions, items may bear CE marking or other regional safety marks to indicate compliance with standards.
