Fleece-insulated refers to materials or products that rely on fleece fabric to provide insulation. Fleece is a soft, lightweight fabric usually made from polyester fibers. Its brushed surface traps air, which helps slow heat loss and keep the wearer warm without bulk.

Fabric and construction: Most fleece insulation uses polar fleece or microfleece, produced by knitting or weaving polyester and then brushing the surface. The insulating quality largely depends on the fabric's loft (pile) and thickness, as well as the construction of the garment or product. Recycled polyester is commonly used to reduce environmental impact.

Applications: Fleece-insulated items are common in outerwear such as jackets and vests, as well as in gloves, hats, sleeping bags, and blankets. Some home goods and camping equipment also use fleece insulation, including curtains and bed liners.

Advantages and limitations: The approach offers warmth with a high warmth-to-weight ratio, flexibility, and quick-drying properties. It tends to be breathable and easy to care for. However, fleece insulation can lose loft when damp, may compress over time, and can shed microplastics during washing. It is less effective as a sole insulator in very cold or wet conditions without additional layers or waterproofing.

Care and environmental considerations: Fleece-insulated items are typically machine washable; tumble drying on low heat helps restore loft. Avoid high heat and fabric softeners, which can reduce wicking and softness. Environmentally, fleece is usually polyester, derived from petrochemicals; many manufacturers offer recycled polyester options to reduce resource use, though microplastic shedding remains a concern.
