Flebitida is a term that refers to inflammation of a vein. This condition can occur in superficial veins, which are closer to the skin's surface, or in deep veins, which are located further within the body. The most common cause of flebitida is injury or irritation to the vein. This can be due to a variety of factors, including trauma, prolonged immobility, certain medical conditions, or the insertion of intravenous catheters.

Symptoms of flebitida can vary depending on whether it affects superficial or deep veins. Superficial flebitida often presents with redness, warmth, tenderness, and a palpable cord-like hardening along the affected vein. The skin over the vein may also appear red and inflamed. In more severe cases, a blood clot may form within the inflamed vein, a condition known as thrombophlebitis.

Deep vein flebitida, also known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) when a clot is present, can be more serious. Symptoms may include swelling, pain, warmth, and discoloration of the limb. DVT is a concern because the blood clot can break off and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism, which is a life-threatening condition.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and may be supplemented by imaging studies such as ultrasound to visualize the vein and any potential blood clots. Treatment for flebitida depends on its severity and cause. For superficial flebitida, conservative measures like warm compresses, elevation of the affected limb, and anti-inflammatory medications are often sufficient. If a blood clot is present, anticoagulation medication may be prescribed to prevent further clot formation and reduce the risk of complications. In cases of severe or recurrent flebitida, further investigation into underlying causes may be necessary.
