Fishfly refers to a phenomenon where fish appear to "fly" out of the water, often leaping or jumping significant distances. This behavior is commonly observed in various species of fish, particularly during feeding, escaping predators, or spawning. The term is colloquial and not a formal biological classification, but it describes the visual effect when fish propel themselves above the water's surface.

Fishfly typically occurs when fish use their tails and bodies to generate enough force to break the water's surface tension. This action can be seen in species such as salmon, trout, herring, and tuna. The ability to leap is advantageous for avoiding predators, catching airborne prey like insects, or navigating shallow waters. In some cases, fish may also flyfly to reach new habitats, such as moving upstream during migration.

The distance and height of a fishfly vary depending on the species, size, and circumstances. Some fish, like flying fish (family Exocoetidae), are particularly well-known for their ability to glide through the air for extended periods, using modified pectoral fins as wings. While not all fish that leap are true flying fish, the term fishfly is sometimes used more broadly to describe any airborne fish movement.

Fishfly is also a popular activity in recreational fishing, where anglers may target jumping fish for sport or as an indicator of feeding activity.
