Filmmasker are facial coverings and prosthetic appliances used in film production to alter an actor’s appearance, create fantastical or non-human characters, or enable specific visual effects. They can be made as silicone- or latex-based masks, full-head shells, creature suits, or decorative masks that help performers assume a different identity or transform on screen. Masks are typically applied with skin-safe adhesives and blended into the surrounding makeup to achieve a seamless look.

Historically, film makeup artists have used masks and prosthetics since the early days of cinema, evolving from simple allowed effects to highly detailed, life-like appliances. The development of silicone and advanced latex prosthetics in the late 20th century expanded realism and comfort, enabling more complex performances. Today, filmmakers often combine practical masks with digital masking and CGI to achieve desired results.

Production of a filmmask involves several steps. Concept art or reference designs are created, followed by sculpting a model in clay. A negative mold is made from the sculpture, and the final mask shell is cast in silicone or latex. The piece is cured, trimmed, and detailed with painting, hair work, and additional appliances such as teeth, contact lenses, or animatronic elements. A test fit ensures mobility, comfort, and compatibility with lighting and camera work.

Materials and types vary, including latex masks for simpler roles and silicone masks for more durable, lifelike texture. Full-face masks, partial masks, and disguised or creature masks are common, sometimes enhanced with animatronics or 3D-printed components.

Safety, hygiene, and ethical considerations are important, including skin compatibility, safe removal, and careful handling during removal to protect the performer.
