Figureshads are a type of freshwater fish belonging to the genus *Pseudopungtungia*, part of the family Gobiidae, commonly known as gobies. They are native to East Asia, particularly found in the rivers and streams of China, Korea, and Japan. The name "figureshad" is derived from their distinctive, elongated, and slightly flattened body shape, resembling a slender, elongated fish with a somewhat transparent appearance, which allows internal structures to be faintly visible.

These fish are small, typically reaching lengths of 5 to 10 centimeters (2 to 4 inches). They are often kept in aquariums due to their unique appearance and relatively easy care requirements. Figureshads are omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, algae, and detritus in the wild, while in captivity, they accept a varied diet including flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods.

In the aquarium trade, figureshads are sometimes confused with other slender gobies, such as the *Pseudogobius* species, but they are distinguished by their slightly more robust body and the presence of a small, rounded dorsal fin. They are peaceful fish, making them suitable for community tanks with non-aggressive species. However, they may be sensitive to water quality, requiring well-maintained tanks with stable parameters, including a temperature range of 18–24°C (64–75°F) and a pH between 6.5 and 7.5.

Breeding figureshads in captivity is challenging and rarely documented, as they typically spawn in flowing water with fine substrates. In the wild, they are not considered commercially significant but are valued by hobbyists for their aesthetic appeal and behavioral traits. Conservation status is not a major concern for figureshads, as they are not currently threatened in their natural habitats.
