In practice, fieldassisted effects occur when a field influences energy barriers, transport, orientation, or reaction pathways, thereby altering kinetics or microstructure compared to field-free conditions.

In materials science and chemistry, electric-field assisted phenomena include field-assisted diffusion and ion transport, field-assisted deposition or electrodeposition, and field-assisted sintering, notably spark plasma sintering, where pulsed electric current acts as a field to accelerate densification. Magnetic-field assisted processes include orientation and alignment of anisotropic particles, field-induced self-assembly, and magnetorheological effects that change mechanical properties under a magnetic field. Electric or magnetic fields can also drive field-assisted crystallization or phase transformations, influencing grain size and texture.

Applications span electronics, energy storage, and nanotechnology. Fieldassisted methods can enable processing at lower temperatures, reduce energy consumption, or create non-equilibrium structures with desirable properties. They also introduce challenges such as field gradients causing inhomogeneous microstructures, equipment requirements, and the need to distinguish field effects from thermal or chemical influences.
