Fibrositis, also known as fibromyalgia or myofascial pain syndrome in some contexts, traditionally refers to a condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and tenderness. The term "fibrositis" derives from "fibro," meaning fibrous tissue, and "itis," indicating inflammation; however, contemporary understanding recognizes that actual inflammation is not a primary feature of the condition.

Fibrositis was historically believed to involve inflammation of the fibrous tissues surrounding muscles, but current medical consensus considers these symptoms to result from complex, nonspecific alterations in pain processing within the central nervous system. This has led to the broader classification of the condition under fibromyalgia, a chronic disorder marked by widespread pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive difficulties.

The exact cause of fibrositis remains unknown, but it is thought to involve genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. It often coexists with other conditions such as depression, anxiety, and irritable bowel syndrome. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, based on criteria such as widespread pain lasting for more than three months and the presence of tender points upon physical examination.

Treatment generally focuses on symptom management, including pharmacologic approaches such as pain relievers, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants, alongside non-pharmacologic therapies like physical therapy, exercise, stress management, and cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Despite its designation as a "soft tissue" ailment, fibrositis is recognized today as a complex, multifactorial disorder that significantly impacts quality of life. Ongoing research continues to explore its pathophysiology, aiming to develop more effective, targeted treatments.
