A ffékhengers, often referred to as a master cylinder in English, is a critical component of a hydraulic braking system. Its primary function is to convert the mechanical force applied to the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure. This pressure is then transmitted through brake lines to the wheel cylinders or calipers, which in turn apply force to the brake pads or shoes, slowing or stopping the vehicle.

The ffékhengers typically consists of a cylindrical body containing one or two pistons. When the brake pedal is depressed, it pushes on a rod connected to the piston(s). This action forces brake fluid from a reservoir into the cylinder, generating hydraulic pressure. In dual-circuit systems, common in modern vehicles for safety, there are usually two separate pistons and fluid chambers. This design ensures that if one circuit fails, the other can still provide braking force to at least some of the wheels.

The ffékhengers is usually located in the engine bay, near the brake booster and brake pedal assembly. Its proper functioning is essential for safe vehicle operation. Wear or damage to the internal seals of the ffékhengers can lead to a spongy brake pedal feel, reduced braking effectiveness, or complete brake failure. Regular inspection and maintenance of the braking system, including the ffékhengers, are therefore highly recommended.
