Fertilitás refers to the natural capability to produce offspring. It is a complex biological process influenced by a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. In humans and many other animal species, fertility is typically associated with sexual reproduction, involving the union of male and female gametes. The male gamete is the sperm, and the female gamete is the ovum (egg cell).

For a successful conception to occur, a viable ovum must be released from the female reproductive system, typically during ovulation, and then successfully fertilized by a motile sperm. This fertilization usually takes place in the fallopian tube. Following fertilization, the resulting zygote undergoes cell division and implants in the uterus, initiating pregnancy.

Other factors that can impact fertility include hormonal balance, reproductive health conditions, general health, nutrition, stress levels, exposure to certain environmental toxins, and lifestyle choices such as smoking or excessive alcohol consumption.

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after a period of regular, unprotected intercourse, typically one year. It can stem from issues in either the male or female reproductive systems, or a combination of factors. Medical advancements have led to various diagnostic tools and assisted reproductive technologies (ART) to help individuals and couples facing fertility challenges.
