Fast charging refers to charging methods that deliver power at higher rates than conventional charging to reduce the time required to recharge a battery. It relies on higher voltages, currents, or both, combined with optimized charging profiles and thermal management to limit heat generation.

In practice, a charger and the device negotiate a suitable power level through a protocol. The device may precondition the battery by warming or cooling and limiting current at the start. As the battery fills, the charging curve slows to protect cells and manage heat, balancing speed with longevity.

Common standards include USB Power Delivery (PD) and its fast formats, USB-C PPS, and wireless fast charging tiers. For mobile devices, PD-based adapters can deliver up to 100 watts. In automotive and some power tools, fast charging uses higher-power DC protocols such as CCS, CHAdeMO, or proprietary systems designed for rapid replenishment of large batteries.

Safety and efficiency are central to fast charging. Advanced chargers monitor temperature, voltage, and current, and reduce or cut power if limits are approached. Fast charging can stress batteries, potentially accelerating wear if mismanaged, but modern chemistries and thermal control mitigate long-term effects when used within design specifications.

Performance varies by device, cable, temperature, and remaining battery capacity. Not all devices support fast charging, and the fastest speeds are typically available for devices with large-capacity batteries and dedicated controllers. The fastest speeds are usually offered for short periods during a charging session.
