Fagyasztó is the Hungarian term for a freezer, an appliance or compartment designed to store food at low temperatures to halt spoilage and preserve texture and nutrients. Freezers may be standalone units, commonly called chest freezers or upright freezers, or they can be integrated as a separate compartment within a refrigerator. In households it is used to freeze bulk purchases, stock prepared meals, and store seasonal produce.

Most household freezers are designed to operate around -18°C (0°F). Some models offer adjustable temperatures and energy-saving modes. Older classifications used energy labels such as A to G; modern devices use similar efficiency ratings with a focus on annual energy consumption. Freezers may be frost-free (no manual defrost required) or require periodic defrosting.

Freezing preserves food by slowing enzymatic activity and inhibiting microbial growth. Storage times vary: fruits and vegetables are often blanched before freezing; meat can be stored for months depending on type; bread can last for several months. For best quality, freeze quickly to a low temperature and use airtight packaging to prevent ice crystals and freezer burn.

Safety and maintenance: keep the door seals clean and intact, avoid frequent temperature fluctuations, and defrost manually if frost builds up in a manual-defrost model. Ensure proper placement away from heat sources and direct sunlight, and follow manufacturer guidelines for loading, organization, and recommended storage times.
