Most fabricsoften formulations use cationic surfactants, usually quaternary ammonium compounds, that adhere to fiber surfaces and form a thin lubricating layer. This layer reduces friction between fibers, resulting in a softer feel and less static. Additional ingredients often include conditioning polymers, emulsifiers, fragrance compounds, and colorants. Dryer sheets apply a similar conditioning action as heat and tumbling help transfer the agents from the sheet to the fabric.
