This seizing prevents the piston from moving freely.

When the brake pedal is applied, the hydraulic fluid is meant to push the piston outwards, forcing the brake pads to clamp onto the brake rotor. If the piston is stuck, this action is hindered or fails entirely. This can manifest as a weakened braking performance or a complete loss of braking power on the affected wheel. Conversely, a stuck piston can also remain partially engaged, causing the brake pad to constantly drag against the rotor, leading to overheating, premature wear of the brake pad and rotor, and a noticeable burning smell.
