Fékbetétek, also known as brake pads, are a crucial component of a disc braking system. They are designed to provide friction against the brake rotor (or disc) to slow down or stop a vehicle. This friction converts the kinetic energy of the moving vehicle into heat.

The typical fékbetét consists of a metal backing plate and a friction material bonded to one side. The friction material is the part that comes into contact with the rotor. Various materials are used for this friction compound, each with its own properties affecting performance, durability, and noise. Common types include organic (non-asbestos organic or NAO), semi-metallic, and ceramic. Organic pads are generally quieter and less aggressive on rotors but may wear faster. Semi-metallic pads offer better heat dissipation and stopping power but can be noisier and wear rotors more quickly. Ceramic pads provide a good balance of performance, quiet operation, and low dust production.

When the driver applies the brakes, hydraulic pressure is sent to the brake caliper. The caliper then pushes the fékbetétek against the rotating brake rotor, creating the necessary friction to slow the vehicle. Over time and with use, the friction material wears down. Worn fékbetétek can lead to reduced braking effectiveness, longer stopping distances, and potentially damage to the brake rotors. Therefore, regular inspection and replacement of fékbetétek are essential for vehicle safety. Indicators, such as a metal tab that scrapes against the rotor when the pads are worn thin, are often incorporated to alert the driver.
