Extremematerials is a term used in materials science to describe substances engineered to maintain functional performance under conditions that exceed those encountered by standard engineering materials. This encompasses extreme temperatures, pressures, radiation, chemical aggressiveness, mechanical loads, or combinations thereof. Extremematerials may arise from intrinsic chemistries and crystal structures or from engineered microstructures and composites designed to resist degradation or fail safely under duress.

Common classes include refractory metals and ceramics such as tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, hafnium carbide, and tungsten carbide; ultra-high-temperature ceramics like hafnium carbide and tantalum carbide; ceramic matrix composites; carbon-based materials; and advanced alloys such as high-entropy alloys and nickel- or cobalt-based superalloys optimized for extreme environments. Materials are selected for properties such as high melting point, hardness, toughness, corrosion and radiation resistance, and stability under thermal cycling.

Characterization and testing of extremematerials rely on specialized facilities and methods capable of simulating extreme conditions, such as high-temperature furnaces, neutron irradiation, laser and arc-jet testing, and high-pressure environments. Processing techniques include traditional sintering and welding, chemical vapor deposition, and additive manufacturing, often optimized to control microstructure and phase stability.

Applications span space exploration, nuclear reactors, rocket and turbine engines, deep-sea and high-pressure drilling, and chemical processing in harsh environments. Key challenges include balancing strength and toughness, radiation damage management, cost and manufacturability, and long-term reliability under coupled extreme stimuli.

Ongoing research directions combine computational materials design, advanced alloys and ceramics, high-entropy systems, ultra-hard and endurance-capable coatings, and metamaterials tailored for extreme-property targets.
