Ultrahigh temperature refers to temperatures at which conventional engineering materials lose structural integrity, typically around 2000°C and higher. In engineering disciplines such as aerospace and materials science, ultrahigh-temperature technologies seek materials and designs able to withstand extreme thermal and oxidative environments.

Ultrahigh-temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are a leading class of materials in this domain. They include carbides and diborides of early transition metals, such as hafnium carbide (HfC), tantalum carbide (TaC), hafnium diboride (HfB2), and zirconium diboride (ZrB2). These compounds have among the highest known melting points, with values exceeding 3500°C and some near 3950°C for certain carbides. They also exhibit high hardness and stiffness, and favorable high-temperature mechanical properties, but their practical use is limited by oxidation resistance in air and brittleness. In air at ultrahigh temperatures, protective coatings or composite architectures are often required to prevent rapid degradation.

Applications include thermal protection systems for atmospheric reentry, propulsion components for rockets and hypersonic vehicles, and other components exposed to extreme heat. Challenges include oxidation and recession in oxidizing environments, poor thermal shock resistance, processing difficulty due to very high melting points, and high cost. Research focuses on protective coatings, such as silicon carbide-based layers, and on creating composite materials that blend UHTCs with refractory carbon or ceramics to improve toughness and oxidation resistance.

Continued development aims to expand the usable temperature window, improve durability under real-world conditions, and reduce manufacturing costs.
