extradenticle

Extradenticle is a term used in the field of dentistry to describe a small, additional tooth that develops outside the normal dental arch. These teeth are often referred to as supernumerary teeth or accessory teeth. Extradenticles can occur in various parts of the mouth, including the upper and lower jaws, and can be found in both primary (baby) and permanent dentitions.

The exact cause of extradenticles is not fully understood, but they are believed to result from abnormal development of the dental lamina, the tissue from which teeth originate. Extradenticles can vary in size and shape, and they may be fully formed or only partially developed. Some extradenticles are functional and can erupt through the gum tissue, while others remain impacted and do not erupt.

Extradenticles can be identified through dental examinations and imaging techniques such as X-rays or cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). In most cases, extradenticles do not cause any significant problems and do not require treatment. However, in some instances, they may interfere with orthodontic treatment or cause discomfort. In such cases, dental professionals may recommend extraction or other interventions to address the issue.

Extradenticles are relatively rare, with an estimated prevalence of less than 1% in the general population. They can occur at any age, but they are most commonly found in children and young adults. The presence of an extradenticle does not necessarily indicate any underlying dental or systemic conditions.
