Eventrelated refers to phenomena, measurements, or analyses that are anchored to a specific event, such as a sensory stimulus, a cognitive decision, or a motor action. In experimental settings, event-related designs contrast with ongoing, spontaneous brain activity by aligning data to the onset or timing of the event of interest. The approach is widely used in psychology, neuroscience, and related fields to isolate the neural processes engaged by particular events.

A primary example is the event-related potential (ERP). An ERP is a time-locked brain response measured with electroencephalography (EEG) that is obtained by averaging EEG segments across many trials centered on the same event. Averaging reduces random fluctuations and reveals systematic voltage changes associated with distinct processing stages. ERP components are typically named by their polarity (positive or negative) and their latency in milliseconds, such as the P300 or N400, with each component linked to specific cognitive operations like attention, working memory updating, or language processing. ERP research often distinguishes stimulus-locked (time-locked to the event) from response-locked analyses, depending on the research question.

Methodologically, ERP studies involve presenting the event repeatedly, recording continuous EEG, segmenting data into epochs around the event, removing artifacts (e.g., blinks, muscle activity), filtering, and baselining. Researchers quantify component amplitudes and latencies at particular electrode sites to infer the timing and robustness of underlying neural processes.

Applications include basic cognitive neuroscience, clinical research on psychiatric and neurological conditions, language and perception studies, and investigations of aging or development. Limitations include relatively poor spatial resolution, the need for many trials to obtain stable averages, and potential overlap of adjacent components that can complicate interpretation.
