An eventer is a rider who competes in eventing, a multi-discipline equestrian sport that combines dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. Eventing originated as cavalry training in the 19th century and is governed internationally by the FEI. The term is most commonly used in English-speaking countries.

Dressage tests judge balance, cadence, and accuracy through a fixed sequence of movements. Cross-country involves a long outdoor course with fixed and natural obstacles, with penalties for refusals, falls, time faults, and route deviations. Show jumping tests a course of fences in an arena, with faults for rails, refusals, and exceeding the time limit. Final scoring sums penalties from all phases; the lower the total, the better the performance.

Major international events include the Olympic Games and the FEI World Equestrian Games, alongside top competitions such as Badminton, Burghley, and Pau. Riders often progress from national levels to international events, sometimes partnering with multiple horses over their careers.

Training emphasizes fitness, technique, and horse care across all phases. Equipment includes dressage and jumping saddles, bridles, protective gear, and safety helmets. Eventing carries risk, and modern safety measures—course design, medical protocols, and protective equipment—seek to minimize injuries.

Notable eventers include riders such as Mark Todd, Pippa Funnell, Michael Jung, Ingrid Klimke, and Tim Price, who have won major championships and Olympic medals. The term "eventer" is sometimes used informally for people who organize or manage events, though this usage is less common in competition contexts.
