Historical roots in Christianity: the Great Commission in the New Testament; early Christian preaching; missionary movements in Europe and the Americas; later global missions; in other traditions, analogous forms exist, such as dharma propagation in Hinduism or dawa in Islam, with varying methods.

Methods: interpersonal conversation, invitation to worship services, revival meetings, public preaching, tract and media distribution, charitable service, youth and campus outreach, radio, television, and online engagement; approaches range from persuasive, to invitational, to dialogic, with differing norms about consent and pressure.

Ethics and criticisms: debates over balance between sharing faith and imposing beliefs; concerns about coercion, insensitivity to cultural diversity, manipulation, and colonial-era histories; many traditions emphasize respectful dialogue, consent, listening, and avoiding aggressive tactics.
