Etuakselisto is the Finnish term for the front axle assembly of a vehicle. It refers to the set of components that connect the front wheels to the chassis, support the vehicle’s front-end mass, and enable steering and suspension functions. The exact composition varies by vehicle design, but the term covers both rigid front axles and independent front suspension layouts.

The front axle assembly typically includes elements such as the axle beam or front suspension arms, wheel hubs, steering knuckles, tie rods and their ends, and the springs and dampers that form the suspension. In driven configurations, drive members such as constant-velocity joints or drive shafts connect the front wheels to the powertrain. In many front-wheel-drive designs, the differential is housed within the transaxle rather than the front axle housing; in four-wheel-drive and some older designs, the differential can be located inside the front axle itself.

There are two main configurations of etuakselisto. A rigid front axle uses a single beam with leaf springs or similar springs, common in many trucks, SUVs, and some off-road vehicles. An independent front suspension uses separate control arms or struts, with coil or air springs, providing each wheel with independent movement. Modern passenger cars most often employ independent front suspension, while rigid axles remain common in applications requiring high load capacity or rugged terrain.

Maintenance considerations include inspecting bearings, ball joints, tie-rod ends, and bushings, as well as wheel alignment and lubrication. Wear, corrosion, or misalignment can affect steering response, handling, and tire wear.
