Etnograf is the term used for a person who conducts ethnography, a qualitative field of study that examines cultures and social groups through immersive fieldwork and detailed observation. In languages such as Swedish, Russian, and other European languages, etnograf denotes a researcher who collects descriptive data about people’s practices, beliefs, and social relationships, with the aim of understanding cultural patterns.

The word combines elements meaning “people” (ethnos) and “writing” or “description” (graphê). Etnograf is closely related to ethnography and cultural anthropology, and the role can appear in disciplines such as sociology, geography, history, and museum studies. Ethnography emerged as a formal research approach in the 19th and early 20th centuries and has since evolved with methodological changes, including reflexivity and digital or online ethnography. Today, etnografy can be conducted in academic research, applied settings, non-governmental organizations, and cultural institutions, often emphasizing collaboration with communities and context-sensitive interpretation.
