Etioloogia, or etiological study, differentiates causes from mechanisms. Historical frameworks, such as Koch’s postulates for infectious diseases and Hill’s criteria for causation, have shaped how scientists evaluate etiologic hypotheses. Limitations include confounding factors, bias, and the complexity of multifactorial diseases.

In Estonian usage, etioloogiaga refers to the etiological context of a topic. It is used to indicate that an issue or finding relates to its causes, such as etioloogilised faktorer või etioloogiline seos.
