Erikoisnäppäimet refers to special keys found on a computer keyboard that perform functions beyond typing standard alphanumeric characters. These keys can be broadly categorized into several groups. Modifier keys, such as Shift, Control (Ctrl), Alt, and the Windows key (or Command key on macOS), are used in combination with other keys to activate shortcuts or alter the input. For example, holding Shift while pressing a letter key produces an uppercase character.

Function keys, typically labeled F1 through F12, are located at the top of most keyboards and perform context-sensitive actions depending on the active application. For instance, F1 often opens a help menu, while F5 can refresh a web page. Navigation keys, including Arrow keys, Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down, allow users to move the cursor or scroll through documents and web pages without using the mouse.

Other special keys include Insert, Delete, Print Screen, Scroll Lock, and Pause/Break. The Insert key toggles between overwrite and insert mode for text editing, while Delete removes characters. Print Screen captures a screenshot of the entire screen. Scroll Lock and Pause/Break have more specialized functions, often related to system behavior or older applications. Many special keys also have secondary functions accessible by holding down the Fn key, commonly found on laptops. These additional functions might control screen brightness, volume, or other hardware settings.
