entfallende

Entfallende is the attributive form of the German participle entfallen and is used to describe something that has fallen away or been omitted in a text, statement, or version. In linguistics and grammar it designates elements that are not present in a given construction, often as a point of analysis or description.

In linguistic analysis entfallende Merkmale, entfallende Satzteile or entfallende Details refer to elements that are absent in a particular version or transcription. Morphology and usage. As a present participle used attributively, entfallende (plural) or entfallender/ entfallendes (gender and case dependent) describes the omitted component: das entfallende Satzglied, die entfallenen Details, der entfallende Nebensatz. It often appears in discussions of editing, transcription, or explanations of concise or abridged forms.

Examples. Das entfallende Satzglied erschwert die Interpretation des Satzes. In der gekürzten Fassung bleiben mehrere Details entfallen. Der entfallende Nebensatz wird im Kommentar ergänzt. In contrast to entfallende is also possible to use synonyms such as ausgelassene or weggelassene, depending on context.

Etymology and relation. Entfallende leitet sich vom Verb entfallen ab, das „weggelassen werden, verschwinden“ bedeutet. In glossaries and linguistic works it is closely related to Entfall, Auslassung and Ellipse, all terms describing omission or omission phenomena in language.
