enraizante

Enraizante is a substance used in horticulture to promote the development of roots in plant cuttings. It is commonly sold as a powder, liquid, or gel containing rooting hormones, typically auxins such as indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), or naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). Some formulations may include fungicides to reduce damping-off disease.

Auxin-based rooting promotes the formation of root primordia at the cut end of a cutting, accelerating adventitious rooting and increasing the proportion of cuttings that root and the speed of root emergence. The effectiveness depends on plant species, cutting type, and environmental conditions.

For application, the cut end is coated with enraizante before planting. Powder formulations are dusted on, often with a concentration corresponding to about 0.1–1% IBA; liquids are used as dips or sprays with specified dilutions per product label; gels can be applied similarly. Always follow the product instructions and discard if discolored or clumped. Handle with clean scissors; avoid contact with skin; wash hands after use. After treatment, plant in a suitable rooting medium at appropriate humidity and light.

Types and considerations: Powder, liquid, and gel forms are common. Organic and synthetic variants exist; some products are designed for specific crops. Concentrations and treatment times vary; not all species respond to enraizantes, particularly some woody shrubs or ferns.

History: The practice relies on auxins discovered in the early 20th century and was popularized for propagation through the mid-century. Today, enraizantes are a standard tool in nurseries and home horticulture.
