Auxin-based refers to approaches, products, or systems that rely on the plant hormone auxin or synthetic analogs to influence growth, development, or cellular processes. The term covers both natural hormone actions in plants and engineered tools used in research and agriculture.

Auxins are a family of plant hormones, with indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) as the principal natural auxin. They regulate cell elongation, root formation, apical dominance, and responses to light and gravity. Auxin distribution within plant tissues is controlled by polar transport involving PIN proteins, creating gradients that influence gene expression through receptors such as TIR1/AFB. This triggers degradation of AUX/IAA repressors and activation of ARF transcription factors, enabling auxin-responsive growth programs.

Synthetic auxins, including 2,4-D, dicamba, and picloram, mimic natural auxin activity and are widely used as herbicides to control broadleaf weeds. Other compounds like indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) are used to promote rooting in cuttings and in tissue culture. In biotechnology and cell biology, auxin-based systems such as the auxin-inducible degron (AID) enable conditional protein degradation in cells by promoting recognition of AID-tagged proteins for ubiquitin-mediated destruction when auxin is present.

Safety and regulatory considerations accompany auxin-based methods, as synthetic auxins can affect non-target species and ecosystems. Proper handling, environmental assessment, and adherence to labeling and guidelines are essential in agricultural, horticultural, and research contexts.
