Energysparing is the practice of reducing energy consumption through efficiency, conservation, and more efficient use of energy across sectors such as buildings, industry, and transport. It aims to deliver the same energy services—heating, lighting, mobility, and process energy—using less energy. The concept is closely linked to energy efficiency and energy management, rather than to energy production or generation alone.

Technical measures involve upgrading equipment and infrastructure to operate with lower energy input. Examples include improved insulation and airtightness, high-efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), LED lighting, efficient motors and drives, heat recovery, and smart controls. Behavioral changes, such as adjusting thermostats, turning off unused devices, and optimizing appliance use, also contribute.

In buildings, energysparing encompasses retrofits, passive design, and building automation. In industry, it covers process optimization, equipment upgrades, cogeneration, and waste-heat recovery. In transportation, it includes more efficient vehicles, electrification where appropriate, improved logistics, and public transit to reduce energy per kilometer.

Policy and standards support energysparing through energy performance regulations, labeling, and energy-management systems such as ISO 50001 and EU directives on energy efficiency in buildings and products. Energy savings are typically expressed in kWh or GJ, with co-benefits including reduced costs and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Challenges include upfront costs, the rebound effect, split incentives, and measurement accuracy.
