The term "emistema" is derived from the Spanish word "emistema," which itself originates from the Yoruba word *emístema*, meaning "to play music together." These ensembles are deeply rooted in Afro-Caribbean cultural traditions and often serve as the backbone of local music scenes, blending indigenous, African, and European influences.

An emistema typically consists of a small group of musicians playing a mix of percussion instruments, such as congas, bongos, and claves, alongside melodic instruments like the tres (a three-stringed guitar), maracas, and sometimes the piano or trumpet.
