Emergensi is a term used in Indonesian to denote emergencies and, more broadly, the field of emergency management and public-safety response. It describes situations requiring urgent attention and the organized activities designed to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from such events. In practice, emergensi covers both the condition of an urgent event and the work of coordinating resources and procedures to handle it.

An emergensi may arise from natural hazards, technological accidents, health crises, or human-caused incidents. The practice of emergensi management typically encompasses four interrelated phases: preparedness (risk assessment, planning, training, drills, and resource stockpiling); prevention and risk reduction (safety standards, land-use planning, early warning systems); response (rescue, medical care, evacuation, incident stabilization); and recovery (reconstruction, rehabilitation, and returning to normal).

Organizationally, emergensi work is usually coordinated by national and local authorities with involvement from emergency services, health systems, civil defense, and often non-governmental and private-sector partners. Common tools include incident command systems, emergency operations centers, mutual-aid agreements, and standardized communication protocols to inform the public. Public information and risk communication are essential to reduce confusion and guide appropriate action during events.

Legally and administratively, many countries formalize emergensi within disaster risk management frameworks aligned with international standards. In Indonesia, disaster management is supported by national and regional agencies, including the Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB). The term is used in similar forms in other languages to describe the effort to protect lives and property from hazards through coordinated action.
