Elicimin is a fictional organic compound used in educational contexts to illustrate elimination reactions in organic chemistry. It is commonly portrayed as a halogenated alkyl compound that can undergo either E1 or E2 elimination to form an alkene, depending on the reaction conditions and reagents.

Structure and representations of elicimin are intentionally simplified for teaching. In typical diagrams, it is drawn as a secondary alkyl halide with a β-hydrogen positioned to permit elimination, sometimes involving a cyclohexane or other saturate framework to highlight stereochemical considerations. The exact molecular details are not fixed, as elicimin serves as a generic model rather than a real specimen.

Mechanisms and outcomes. In the E1 pathway, elicimin reacts under mild, polar protic conditions to form a carbocation intermediate, followed by loss of the leaving group and deprotonation to yield the alkene. In the E2 pathway, elicimin is treated with a strong base, and the elimination occurs in a concerted step with anti-periplanar alignment of the leaving group and the β-hydrogen. In cyclic systems, the geometry can impose stereochemical constraints, exemplifying concepts such as anti-periplanar requirement and Saytzev versus Hofmann selectivity.
