These methods are commonly applied in civil engineering and environmental remediation.

The fundamental principle behind elektroosetöötlusteks is the movement of pore water due to an applied electric potential. When an electric field is established across a saturated soil or sludge, water molecules, which are polar, tend to migrate towards the electrodes. This migration can be harnessed to extract water from the material. Different variations exist, including electroosmosis, electrophoresis, and electrodialysis, each with specific mechanisms and applications.

Electroosmosis is the most prevalent technique within this category. It involves placing electrodes into the material and applying a direct current. Water migrates through the pores towards the electrodes, where it can be collected or drained. This process is particularly effective in fine-grained soils, such as silts and clays, where conventional dewatering methods are less efficient.
