Elektronesena, also known as the electric eel (*Electrophorus electricus*), is a species of knifefish native to the blackwater and floodplain lakes of the Amazon Basin in South America. It is renowned for its ability to generate powerful electric discharges, which it uses primarily for hunting, defense, and communication.

The electric eel is not actually an eel but belongs to the order Gymnotiformes, commonly known as knifefishes or electric fishes. It can grow up to 2.4 meters (8 feet) in length, though most specimens are smaller, and weigh up to 20 kilograms (44 pounds). Its body is elongated and cylindrical, with a broad, flattened head and a large, terminal mouth. The electric eel possesses a unique organ called the electrocyte, which is composed of modified muscle cells that generate electricity. These organs are arranged in a series along the sides of its body, allowing it to produce electric fields for various purposes.

One of the most striking features of the electric eel is its ability to generate electric shocks, which can reach up to 600 volts and 1 ampere in strength. These discharges are used to stun prey, such as fish, and to defend against predators. The electric eel can also produce weaker electric fields for electrolocation, a process that allows it to navigate and detect objects in its environment. This ability is particularly useful in the murky waters of its habitat, where visibility is often limited.

Electric eels are primarily nocturnal and feed on fish, crustaceans, and other small animals. They are solitary creatures and are not highly social, though they may interact with other individuals during mating season. The species is ovoviviparous, meaning that the females give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. The gestation period lasts approximately three months, and each litter can consist of up to 200 offspring.

Due to habitat destruction, pollution, and overfishing, the electric eel faces several conservation challenges. While it is not currently classified as endangered, its populations are declining in some regions. Efforts to protect its natural habitat and promote sustainable fishing practices are important for ensuring the long-term survival of this fascinating species.
