Elektrokoagulering, often abbreviated as EC, is a medical procedure that uses high-frequency electrical current to heat and destroy abnormal tissue. The electrical current generates heat through resistance in the tissue, causing proteins to denature and cells to coagulate and die. This process effectively seals blood vessels, minimizing bleeding during the procedure and after.

The technique is versatile and can be applied to various medical specialties. In dermatology, it is frequently used for the removal of skin lesions such as warts, skin tags, and small benign tumors. It is also employed in ophthalmology for treating certain eyelid conditions and in gynecology for managing cervical abnormalities. Gastroenterology utilizes electrocoagulation to control bleeding from ulcers or polyps.

Elektrokoagulering can be performed using different methods, including monopolar and bipolar techniques. Monopolar EC involves a single active electrode and a return pad placed elsewhere on the patient's body. Bipolar EC uses two electrodes in close proximity, often at the tip of an instrument, to create a localized current path, which can be more precise and reduce the risk of unintended tissue damage. The depth and extent of coagulation can be controlled by adjusting the power, frequency, and duration of the electrical current. While generally safe, potential side effects can include temporary pain, swelling, and scarring, depending on the treated area and the individual's healing response.
