Elektrogalvaanoinnissa, or electrogalvanizing, is a surface treatment process used to apply a protective zinc coating to metal objects, most commonly steel. It involves immersing the metal part in an electrolytic solution containing zinc ions and then passing an electric current through the solution. The electric current causes the zinc ions to deposit onto the surface of the metal object, forming a uniform and adherent layer of zinc.

This process offers several advantages. The zinc coating provides excellent corrosion resistance, acting as a sacrificial barrier that corrodes preferentially to the underlying metal. This makes electrogalvanized parts ideal for applications where exposure to moisture or corrosive environments is a concern. Furthermore, electrogalvanizing can achieve a smooth and aesthetically pleasing finish, often used in decorative applications as well as for protection. The thickness of the zinc coating can be precisely controlled by adjusting the duration and current density of the process, allowing for tailored protection levels.

Common applications for electrogalvanized products include fasteners like screws and bolts, automotive components, electrical conduits, and various hardware items. While it provides good corrosion resistance, it is generally not recommended for extremely harsh environments where thicker coatings like hot-dip galvanizing might be more suitable. Post-treatment processes, such as chromating or passivation, can further enhance the corrosion resistance and appearance of the electrogalvanized surface.
