Elektripõletid, also known as electric burners or electric hot plates, are cooking appliances that use electricity to generate heat for cooking. They typically consist of a heating element, often a metal coil or a ceramic disc, encased in a protective material. When electricity flows through the heating element, it experiences resistance, which converts electrical energy into heat. This heat is then transferred to cookware placed on top of the burner.

There are two main types of elektripõletid: coil burners and smooth-top (ceramic or induction) burners. Coil burners feature exposed metal coils that directly heat up. They are generally less expensive and more durable but can be harder to clean. Smooth-top burners have a flat, ceramic glass surface with the heating elements concealed underneath. These are easier to clean and offer a sleeker appearance, but can be more prone to scratching. Induction burners, a type of smooth-top, use electromagnetism to heat cookware directly, making them very efficient and fast but requiring specific types of pots and pans.

Elektripõletid are commonly found in small apartments, dorm rooms, or as supplementary cooking surfaces in larger kitchens. They are also used in portable cooking setups. Their operation is relatively simple, controlled by adjustable knobs or touch controls that regulate the power output to the heating element, thereby controlling the temperature. Safety features can include indicator lights to show when the burner is hot and automatic shut-off mechanisms.
