Elastomerler, the Turkish term for elastomers, are a class of polymeric materials that can undergo large elastic deformations and recover their original shape when the applied stress is removed. They are viscoelastic and have a glass transition temperature well below ordinary ambient temperatures, which gives them rubbery behavior at room conditions. Their networks can be either thermoset, with chemical crosslinks, or thermoplastic, which can be melted and reprocessed.

A defining feature of elastomers is their ability to stretch substantially and return to their original dimensions, providing high elasticity and energy storage. The mechanical properties arise from crosslinking in the polymer chains, which restricts flow and gives resilience. Natural rubber, derived from cis-1,4-polyisoprene, is the classic elastomer, while synthetic varieties such as styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), polybutadiene, nitrile rubber (NBR), neoprene (CR), EPDM, silicone, fluorosilicone, and fluorinated elastomers broaden performance across temperature, chemical exposure, and environmental conditions. Vulcanization, typically using sulfur or other curatives, creates a three‑dimensional network that enhances elasticity, heat resistance, and durability. Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) combine elastomeric properties with thermoplastic processability, enabling reuse and simplified manufacturing.

Processing methods include compounding, molding, extrusion, calendering, and vulcanization or thermoplastic shaping. Fillers such as carbon black or silica improve strength and wear resistance. Elastomer properties are highly dependent on formulation, crosslink density, and environmental factors, including ozone, UV exposure, oxidation, and solvent compatibility. Applications span tires, seals, gaskets, hoses, vibration dampers, medical devices, and consumer goods, where elasticity, resilience, and chemical resistance are essential.
