Eelprotsessi is a term used in Finnish-language biology to describe the life cycle and migratory process of freshwater eels (order Anguilliformes), particularly the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). The concept covers the sequence of developmental stages, habitat shifts, and physiological changes that enable eels to move between marine and freshwater environments and to reproduce.

The eel life cycle traditionally begins with leptocephalus larvae that develop in the open ocean and drift long distances. These transparent larvae metamorphose into juvenile forms known as glass eels, which migrate into coastal waters and rivers. In freshwater or estuarine habitats they become elvers, then yellow eels as they grow and acquire pigmentation. After a substantial growth period, eels undergo silvering, a set of physiological and morphological changes that prepare them for long-distance spawning migrations. Mature silver eels return to the sea, migrating thousands of kilometers to spawning grounds.

Reproduction occurs in the distant oceans, with spawning most notably described for the genus Anguilla in the Sargasso Sea in classic studies. After spawning, adults are believed to die, while the larvae that hatch complete the oceanic life cycle.
