Editace is a term used in Czech to describe the process of modifying content to improve its clarity, accuracy, coherence and overall quality. The concept applies across fields such as publishing, media production and information technology, and can refer to changes made to text, audio, video, images or data. The word stems from the verb editovat (to edit), with editace as the corresponding noun form.

In textual work, editace is often distinguished into several levels: substantive editing (revising structure, argumentation and content flow), copy editing (style, terminology, consistency and grammar) and proofreading (checking for surface errors before publication). In journalism and literature, editors balance the author’s intent with reader expectations and factual accuracy, while ensuring compliance with factual standards and copyright rules.

Beyond text, editace covers media production and digital content. Video editing involves assembling footage, sequencing, transitions and visual effects; audio editing covers noise reduction and sound level balancing; image editing includes retouching and color correction. In computing, editing means modifying data or source code. Text editors and integrated development environments support editing, while version control systems track revisions and enable collaborative editing, including on wikis and content management systems.

Process and ethics are central to quality editing. Effective editace aims for precision, readability and neutrality, while respecting authors’ rights and intent.
