This accumulation of fluid, known as edema, can occur in various parts of the body, including the legs, ankles, feet, hands, and face. The swelling is typically painless, though it can sometimes be uncomfortable or lead to a feeling of tightness.

The underlying causes of edeema are diverse and can range from temporary, minor issues to more serious medical conditions. Common causes include prolonged standing or sitting, which can lead to fluid pooling in the lower extremities due to gravity. Dietary factors such as excessive salt intake can also contribute by causing the body to retain more water. Pregnancy is another frequent cause, as hormonal changes and increased pressure from the growing uterus can impede fluid return.

More significant medical reasons for edeema include heart failure, where the heart's reduced pumping efficiency leads to fluid buildup. Kidney disease can also cause edeema because impaired kidney function affects the body's ability to regulate fluid and sodium balance. Liver disease, particularly cirrhosis, can lead to reduced protein production and altered fluid dynamics, resulting in edeema. Certain medications, such as some blood pressure drugs, steroids, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can have edeema as a side effect. Inflammation and allergic reactions can also cause localized edeema.

Diagnosis of the cause of edeema typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and potentially diagnostic tests like blood work, urine tests, or imaging studies to identify the root problem. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause, which may involve lifestyle modifications, medication adjustments, or specific therapies for conditions like heart or kidney disease.
