It acts as the central unit that determines when a door may be opened, locked, or relocked, and it can be installed inside the door, in the frame, or in a nearby enclosure. The controller is commonly used in commercial buildings, secure facilities, and transportation-related applications.

The controller receives authorization requests from readers or input devices, such as cards, PIN pads, biometrics, or mobile credentials. It processes the credential data, enforces access policies, and drives the door’s actuators, such as an electric strike or motorized hinge. It also monitors safety and status sensors—like door position switches, contact sensors, and anti-ventilation or pressure sensors—and can implement timed unlocks, anti-tailgating measures, and audit logging of events for security and maintenance purposes.

Dörrcontrollers vary in architecture. They can be standalone units with built-in power supplies and interfaces or networked devices that connect to an access control system over protocols such as Wiegand, OSDP, RS-485, Ethernet, or CAN. They support different lock configurations (fail-secure or fail-safe) and may offer tamper detection, remote management, and integration with building management systems.
